Strange Visions... - 16th September 1007

There was a Mirror in the castle today. A mirror that wasn't like any mirror I've ever seen. It reflected things...things I'd rather not think about right now. Or maybe ever.

Of course, it's obviously some sort of enchantment, but I wasn't really thinking straight when I saw it and by the time I was the damn thing had disappeared. God only knows where, no-one seems to know anything about it, if I didn't know better I'd think I had imagined it, but it's not the sort of thing you'd forget.

I just hope it hasn't fallen into the wrong hands, although I'm not sure what the wrong hands could do with it anyway.

If only what I saw in it was true

I have heard of such a mirror. In fact...

Are you at Hogwarts, then?

Hogwarts? No, I'm in Camelot Castle.

Never heard of Hogwarts? What kingdom is it in?

Perhaps you're in a different time, then, as that mirror is currently in Hogwarts Castle. We're quite hidden here, you wouldn't be aware. Scotland.

Camelot...

...what might your name be, young man?

Scotland? I don't believe I've heard of it.

A different time?

[Sure why wouldn't whoever this is be from another time? Postively expected by now...]

Is it in Albion, this Scotland?

I'm Arthur Pendragon, Crown Prince of Camelot. Who are you?

Where I am standing it is the year nineteen hundred ninety-one.

Yes. It is. Far into the future from where you are.

...Merlin's Ghost, Arthur Pendragon. It's an immeasurable honor to meet you, your grace.

My name is Minerva McGonagall. Professor of Transfiguration at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The School of WHAT?!

[Sorry, Minerva, things are going to get...awkward.]

I find it very interesting that the fact that I have the mirror you speak of and that I'm from the future didn't phase you in the least, but one mention of magic and you're all up in arms.

Witchcraft and Wizardry, Prince Arthur.

I'm...

This book has thrown many strange things my way Lady McGonagall.

But magic...enchantments, they're dangerous. That mirror showed me something impossible. Why would it do that? To draw me in? To leave me defenseless.

Perhaps magic is different where you are.

I understand, There have been many strange things here that have been quite hard for me to swallow as well.

Yes, magic can be dangerous, if one does not know how to control it properly. Which is why our school was created. There are many laws and regulations set in place to ensure the safety of magical folk and those who cannot do magic alike.

The mirror...it is the Mirror of Erised. It shows you what you most desire in the world.

I see. That's good.

I don't know if that could ever work here. A few times I saw magic being used for good. But then...

Yes, it showed me my mother...I wish it hadn't.

I believe you are from the same world as I, Prince Arthur. I have heard your story.

Our school will not be founded for another four hundred years.

It shows you your heart's desire. It is often painful to have reminders of those we have lost and would give anything to have back. There is someone I see in the mirror as well.

You do?

[He's not going to ask, tempting though it may be.]

The mirror has disappeared...at least it wasn't where it was before. Does it have the ability to travel at will? Is Camelot in danger from its wiles?
[identity profile] animagus-prof.livejournal.com wrote:

I do.

I'm not sure why it might have disappeared. It's not a dangerous object though. It simply shows what you desire. But if you find it again you must be careful. Men have wasted away in front of it, holding onto that vision of their desire instead of attempting to achieve it.

I'm sorry.

Well, I saw something that can never be achieved.
[Which is seriously painful.]

If I find it, I can't see a way I can get back to you in your time. Should I destroy it then?

There is a Muggle saying. "Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."

I see...

[No he doesn't, actually.]

I apologize. A muggle is someone who cannot perform magic. Like yourself.

No, I meant...the saying. What would you do if you found the mirror? Why wouldn't you destroy it? What good can it do anyone?

I have seen the mirror. It is in the castle, as I mentioned previously. It has its uses. It tells you which of your desires go the deepest. Which are most important. That is powerful magic.

And sometimes...I just want to see what could have been. In another life.

I don't know why you'd want to.

Hopefully it's gone back to Scotland, wherever that is...people from other times have come to Camelot before, but they always go back.

There are times when you must make important decisions. There are many reasons to make a choice, and sometimes it's hard to tell which reasons come from where.

Perhaps it was just visiting.

I'm not certain how showing me my long dead mother helps me with anything, but I'll take your word for it.

And I hope that's so.

It's not particularly helpful to see the man I gave up and the children we never had either. But sometimes...I wonder.

I'm sure it's back where it belongs.
